“I felt like coming back home – giving my body a pause for those days. For the first time, it was all about understanding myself, not others. It was a break to listen to my own thoughts. The teacher's presence was powerful; they diligently followed up with individuals and offered support when needed.”

Why Attend a Retreat?
Attending a silent retreat provides an opportunity to give moment-to-moment attention to mindfulness practice over the course of a number of uninterrupted days, thus deeply exploring awareness, experience, and the intrinsic relationship between them. Such times of dedicated mindfulness practice support deepening and widening into an every moment of our lives. Our retreats are designed to be rigorous and intensive, and also nourishing and reflective.
The practice of retreating to explore the inner self has roots that stretch back over 5,000 years – from the ancient mystics and the revered philosophers of the old world to the indigenous wisdom healers and modern-day spiritual leaders. Today, this ancient practice remains relevant, supporting individuals to uncover innate tools for leading a more authentic life.
Firmly grounded in respect and kindness, these retreats are an important experiential learning for all who are interested in turning towards one’s life in all its richness and wonder.
What can I expect on a silent retreat?
5-Day Silent, Teacher-Led Retreats
A 5-day silent mindfulness retreat is opportunity to disconnect from the distractions of daily life and immerse oneself in deep, uninterrupted reflection, self-discovery, and stillness. By engaging in sustained periods of silence, participants can cultivate a heightened sense of awareness and clarity, allowing them to observe their thoughts and emotions without judgment. With the dedicated space and time to understand more about oneself, this intensive practice ultimately fosters a profound sense of inner peace, resilience, and insight, equipping individuals with valuable tools to navigate life's challenges with greater ease and compassion. Daily talks, guided practices, and brief meetings with the teachers provide support and direction. Ultimately, the retreat provides a transformative experience that can lead to lasting personal growth and a deeper connection with oneself.
The Schedule of a Silent Retreat
The standard schedule of a live-online retreat includes the following:
- A 2-3 hour OPENING that is usually held in the evening
- A 12-hour DAILY schedule with sitting, walking, brief group discussions, and meal breaks
- A 3-5 hour CLOSING that is held in the morning
The actual times of a specific retreat may vary; for example, the Opening may be 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM; or the Daily Schedule may start at 9:30 AM and end at 9:30 PM. International students are welcome to attend these retreats and are advised to begin shifting their daily schedule 3-4 days in advance to ease the transition to the 12-hour daily schedule in US time. Harvard Business Review, March 2020
- Matthias Birk
“Practicing meditation has been shown to reduce anxiety, calm the amygdala, increase our ability to think creatively and empathetically take other people’s perspective.
In times of uncertainty, there is a strong temptation to start the day by checking your email and news. But when we do that, we are drawn into reactive mode, often fighting one fire after another. On the contrary, starting the day with a few minutes of meditation can help you center and calm fear-based thoughts.”
